What Is a Percentage Off?

Retail discounts are almost always quoted in percent: "25% off", "buy one get one 50% off", "extra 30% at checkout". The math is straightforward — final = original × (1 − discount ÷ 100) — but doing it in your head while juggling a shopping cart is error-prone.

A $80 jacket at 25% off costs $80 × 0.75 = $60, and you save $20. This tool reports the final price, the amount saved, and the original side by side so the discount is easy to verify. Useful when stores display only the final tag, or when checking that a coupon actually applied.

Chained discounts apply sequentially, not additively. "30% off, then an extra 10%" gives 0.7 × 0.9 = 0.63 → 37% total off, not 40%. Two stacked 25% codes give 43.75% off, not 50%. Always multiply the discount factors when stacking offers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate 20% off a price?
Multiply the price by 0.80 (or subtract 20% from 100%). $50 at 20% off = $50 × 0.80 = $40.
What if I have multiple discounts?
Apply discounts sequentially. First discount, then calculate the second off the new price.
Can I find the original price from a sale price?
Yes, divide the sale price by (1 - discount/100). $40 at 20% off means original = $40 ÷ 0.80 = $50.
