What Is a VAT Calculator?
Value Added Tax is a consumption tax levied at each stage of the supply chain in more than 170 countries. The UK uses a 20% standard rate, a 5% reduced rate and 0% on most food. EU rates vary by country — from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary — with reduced rates on food, books, hospitality and energy.
Freelancers invoicing inside the UK use the Add VAT direction to gross up a quote, while expense claimants use Remove VAT to extract the VAT component from a gross receipt. The calculator takes a price, lets you pick a preset rate or enter a custom one, and shows net, VAT amount and gross together. Useful when working across multiple jurisdictions, where memorising each rate is impractical.
This is a general estimator. Place-of-supply rules, reverse charge, partial exemption and the EU One Stop Shop scheme add complexity beyond a flat rate — confirm with a qualified accountant or HMRC before filing returns.
