What Is a Sales Tax Calculator?

Unlike VAT or GST, US sales tax is collected only at the point of final sale, and only some states impose it. Five states have no state-level sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. The remaining 45 range from around 4% to over 7% at the state level. Counties and cities layer their own taxes on top, which can push the combined rate above 10% in some ZIP codes.

E-commerce sellers configuring product pricing use the calculator to see how a state's rate affects the displayed total. Small-business bookkeepers use the Remove Tax direction to back out the tax component from receipts during reconciliation. Pick a state to load the published state-level rate, or enter a custom combined rate that includes the relevant local additions.

State rates change over time and local taxes vary by ZIP. For business filings or important purchases, verify the exact combined rate with your state Department of Revenue or a qualified accountant.
