What Is an Unlock PDF?
The PDF specification (ISO 32000) distinguishes two kinds of protection. A user password is needed just to open and read the file. An owner password leaves the file readable but restricts actions such as printing, copying text or editing. Many PDFs carry only the second kind, so they open freely yet block useful actions.
This tool handles the case it safely can. When a PDF opens without a password, it loads the document with pdf-lib and re-saves it as a plain file, which drops permission-only restrictions where the file allows. When a PDF requires a password to open, the underlying engine cannot decrypt it — pdf-lib does not implement password-based decryption — so the tool detects that state and tells you a desktop tool such as qpdf with the correct password is needed instead.
Only remove restrictions from documents you own or are authorised to modify, and respect copyright. All processing is local; your file is never uploaded.
