Free Online Sentence Counter Tool
A sentence counter splits text on terminal punctuation (. ! ?) and tallies the result, with smart filters that avoid splitting on common abbreviations.
Your data is processed entirely in your browser and never sent to any server.
How to Use This Text Tool
- Paste or type your text into the input field.
- Read the sentence count and the average words per sentence in the stats panel.
- Compare against your target readability — most web copy aims for 15–20 words per sentence.
- Edit and watch the counts update in real time.
What Is a Sentence Counter?
Counting sentences sounds simple but is tricky: a naive split on periods miscounts every passage that contains "Mr.", "Dr.", "U.S.", "e.g.", "i.e.", "etc." or a decimal number. A useful counter filters those abbreviations and only splits when a period, exclamation mark or question mark is followed by whitespace and a capital letter.
Alongside the sentence count, the tool reports the average words per sentence — a quick readability indicator. Short averages (10–15 words) read fast and feel punchy; long averages (25+) feel dense and academic. Editors use it to spot paragraphs that need tighter rhythm.
Nothing leaves your browser, so drafts stay private.
