What Is a Character Counter?

Character counters exist for hard caps: Twitter/X allows 280 characters, SMS segments at 160, Google meta descriptions truncate near 155, title tags around 60, and Instagram captions hide everything past 125. Knowing the exact count before posting saves you from a mid-sentence chop.

This counter shows total characters, characters excluding spaces, letters only and word count side by side, updating as you type. Toggling between with-spaces and without-spaces lets you match whichever limit your platform enforces.

Nothing is sent to a server, which is useful when the text you're measuring is a password idea, an internal draft, or something else you would rather keep off the wire.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between character count and letter count?
Character count includes every symbol—letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation. Letter count includes only alphabetic characters (A–Z, a–z), excluding spaces and punctuation.
Does it count emojis as one character?
Emojis may count as one or more characters depending on encoding. Our counter uses JavaScript's string length, so some emojis count as 2 characters. Use our emoji remover if you need exact counts.
Why do I need a character counter?
Character limits apply to Twitter (280), meta descriptions (~155), SMS (160), and many form fields. A character counter helps you stay within limits without guessing.
